FREMONT, Neb. – Libbie Brezenski's goal in the 34th minute was the only scoring the College of Saint Mary soccer team needed Saturday night.
The Flames defeated Midland University 1-0 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference contest.
CSM is now 4-1-1 in the GPAC and 6-1-3 overall. The Warriors, who received votes in the most recent NAIA poll, drop to 3-1-1 and 6-3-2.
"We asked the ladies all week to buy into the plan and scout and that's exactly what they did," CSM Coach Jordan Irsik said. "They were incredibly disciplined defensively, sat back and picked their moments and finished the opportunity they were able to."
For CSM's lone goal, Brezenski scored at 33:17 with an assist from Camila Munoz.
"Libbie's goal was a big moment for a freshman to step up," Irsik said. "Camila played a great corner in and Libbie was unmarked and finished the header. You can't ask for a better execution."
Midland outshot the Flames 9-5 in the contest. Alivia Schade had six saves in net for CSM for the shutout.
"I'm really proud of the people who took on new roles today," Irsik said. "We had people who took a step back and then we had new players take on new and bigger roles. Bella Shelley, who has never played midfield, stepped up and played due to an injury and she was absolutely phenomenal. Our defensive line of Reagan (Boex), Kaylie (Ratzlaff) and Hayley (Holden) ran a new system and played as good as you can against some of the top attackers in the conference. And Liv made some amazing point-blank saves."
College of Saint Mary returns to action Wednesday with a home contest against Briar Cliff University. The match will be played at UNO's Caniglia Field and will start at 7 p.m.
