CSM soccer gets big road victory

MITCHELL, S.D. – It took an extra day because of weather, but the College of Saint Mary soccer team was able to go on the road Sunday and come home with three points.

The Flames defeated Dakota Wesleyan University 1-0 in a Great Plains Athletic Conference contest.

"Today was just the type of game you have to fight through in our conference – especially on the road," CSM Coach Jordan Irsik said. "The conditions weren't great, the atmosphere was boisterous and it was incredibly physical. But we were able to do what we needed to do to get the win."

CSM's Kylie Anderson scored the lone goal of the game at 40:33. Teammate Kaitlin Smith earned the assist.

"I'm especially proud of Kylie," Irsik said. "She came in off the bench and took the brunt of the physicality from Dakota Wesleyan. But when we needed her, she was able to stay composed and give us opportunities.

"We had chances to put more in, but goals on the road are hard to come by. I'm proud that we could get the points we really needed today."

Dakota Wesleyan outshot the Flames 19-17 in the contest. Alivia Schade had nine saves in net for CSM.

The Flames are now 3-1 in the GPAC and 5-1-2 overall. CSM returns to play Tuesday at Waldorf.
