Hastings slips past CSM in evenly-matched contest

OMAHA, Neb. – College of Saint Mary matched Hastings College 20 for 20 in shots on goal. But the Broncos capitalized two more times than the Flames.

Hastings defeated CSM 3-1 Wednesday in the Great Plains Athletic Conference contest.

"It's not often you're going to get 20 shots in a match and only finish one," CSM Coach Jordan Irsik said. "We're doing the right things to win, but are not capitalizing on our final opportunities."

Hastings scored first at 22:05 when Naomi Pedroza found the back of the net. She was assisted by Dulce Lopez. Teammate Dekota Schubert made it 2-0 when she scored at 41:29, assisted from Sara Pedroza.

The Broncos came out of the intermission and scored again right away at 46:49 – another goal from Schubert with an assist to Lauryn Metz.

The Flames prevented the shutout at 85:14 when Abbie Anderson (SO/Omaha, Neb.) scored, assisted by Aubrey Vancura (SO/Kearney, Neb.).

"Aubrey was able to beat her defenders in a 1v1 situation to get the cross off," Irsik said. "We had numbers in the box and Abbie Anderson stepped up to get a head on it."

Both teams finished with 20 shots on goal. Sofie Jackson-Peders from Hastings got the win with 14 saves, while CSM's Alivia Schade (SO/Kearney, Neb.) played all 90 minutes in net and tallied 10 saves.

The Flames drop to 4-5 in the GPAC and 7-7-1 overall. Hastings improved to 6-2-2, 11-2-2. CSM plays next on Saturday at 1 p.m. at University of Jamestown.

"Today's game is a game we need to keep our heads high afterwards and use to grow from," Irsik said.
