OMAHA, Neb. – It was all CSM, all game.
The College of Saint Mary soccer team took control of Saturday's contest from the start and never let up in a 6-0 win over Dakota Wesleyan University. The Flames outshot DWU 23-3 in the game.
"We trained this week that we won't give up goal opportunities and to put the pedal down," CSM Coach Jordan Irsik said. "To immediately take the game in our hands and never give any let up is exactly how we wanted today to go. I'm so proud of the team."
Kaitlin Smith (SO/Fort Calhoun, Neb.) was named the team's "Player of the Day" and with good reason. The sophomore scored one goal and had three assists in the victory.
"We got the opportunity to implement everything we have been working on in this game and put our hearts into winning as a team," Smith said.
Teammate Jadyn Sacco (SR/Ralston, Neb.) got the Flames on the board first with a goal at 3:23, assisted by Abbie Anderson (SO/Omaha, Neb.).
CSM's Jimena Estrada Gómez (FR/Omaha, Neb.) scored her first goal of the day at 25:24 (assisted by Smith), which was quickly followed by a goal from Abbey Wilson (JR/Papillion, Neb.) at 27:48 (assisted by Smith).
Kylie Anderson (JR/Omaha, Neb.) scored for the Flames (assisted by Smith) at 30:53 to give CSM a 4-0 lead heading into the intermission.
In the second half, Gomez scored again at 61:53 with an assist from Kylie Anderson before Smith scored an unassisted goal at 69:07.
"Everyone got a chance to play, help contribute to a conference win and shutout and there was no let down," Irsik said. "We couldn't have asked for more."
The Flames played three goalkeepers in the contest. Starter Gabby Felker (JR/Omaha, Neb.) got the win and had one save before being relieved by Alivia Schade (SO/Kearney, Neb.) to start the second half. Schade tallied one save. Madalynn Rhodes (SO/Butte, Mont.) played the final 10 minutes in net.
CSM is now 3-1 in the GPAC and 6-2-1 overall. The Tigers drop to 0-3, 2-4-1.
College of Saint Mary plays a nonconference game Wednesday at Bellevue University. The contest starts at 7 p.m.
