CSM soccer suffers first loss of the season

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The College of Saint Mary soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Sunday.

Harris-Stowe State University defeated the Flames 1-0 in the nonconference contest. It was CSM's second game in as many days on its road trip.

"We knew this would be a tough matchup for us – especially with tired legs and a surface we weren't used to," CSM Coach Jordan Irsik said. "But it was a good challenge for us before conference play."

Harris-Stowe scored the lone goal of the game at 47:24 when Rachael Manley scored off an assist from teammate Mary Grace Angeli.

The Hornets outshot CSM 14-6 in the contest. Harris-Stowe keeper Ondrea Montgomery had two saves in net. Gabby Felker (JR/Omaha, Neb.) tallied five saves for the Flames in the opening half and Alivia Schade (SO/Kearney, Neb.) didn't have any saves in the second half.

"We had a handful of chances, including two shots on goal with less than a minute left," Irsik said. "But they didn't fall today."

CSM (3-1-1) returns to action Wednesday at Northwestern College at 7:15 p.m. in its first Great Plains Athletic Conference contest.

"This was a great test before we start conference matchups this week," Irsik said. "I'm proud of our resilience today and we learned a lot about ourselves as a team."
