Flames improve by 37 strokes, tie for 3rd

LINCOLN, Neb. – A drastic one-day improvement helped the College of Saint Mary golfers move up in the final standings on Tuesday.

The Flames shot 323 at Pioneers Golf Club, a full 37-stroke improvement from the first round, to end in a tie for third in the 13-team field at the Kaitlyn Erickson Doane Invite.

CSM tied with the Doane University 'B' team at 683 for the two-day event, behind only the Doane 'A' team (638) and Hastings College (669).

I'm really proud of how the team responded today — it was a huge improvement from yesterday,'' CSM Coach Keri Rodriguez said. "These scores are much more reflective of what we're capable of.''

Individually, Victoria Farkas turned in a top-10 finish. She placed seventh with an 84-81—165.

Frede Weiss tied for 14th with a 90-80—170, while Katie Freeman tied for 17th with a 93-79—172. Emily Faubel and Sofia Chavez both ended tied for 26th. Faubel shot a 93-86—179 and Chavez had scores of 96-83—179.

The team averaged a more than nine stroke improvement per golfer from day one.

"Our biggest challenge right now is consistency,'' Rodriguez said. "We've shown we can rally on day two, which says a lot about our resilience, but we need to come out strong from the start instead of waiting to find our rhythm.

"We still have work to do as we prepare for the GPAC National Qualifier, but we're moving in the right direction.''

CSM is back in action April 20 and 21 at the Iowa Western Spring Invite at Bent Tree Golf Course in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
