Chavez, Flames lead after opening day
NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. – Freshman Sofia Chavez and her College of Saint Mary 'A' team are the leaders at the midway point of the Peru State Fall Invitational Friday at Table Creek Golf Course.
Chavez, from El Paso, Texas, fired an opening-round 76 to lead by three strokes over Joslyn Johnson of Peru State (79). Emily Faubel of CSM is third after an 80.
The CSM 'A' team leads the six schools and nine team entries after shooting a 322. Iowa Central Community College (338) is second, followed by the Peru State College 'A' (349), the Doane University 'A' (350), CSM's 'B' team (368), Southeast Community College (380), the Peru State 'B' (407), the Doane 'B' (415) and Graceland University (440).
Other scorers for the CSM 'A' were Victoria Farkas (t4th, 82), Katie Freeman (t7th, 84), Erika Headlee (t13th, 87).
Also for the Flames: Frede Weiss (15th, 88), Ritzy Dominguez (t17th, 90), Anna Moore (20th, 92), Alana Vazquez (t27, 98), Samantha Norris (t32nd, 102) and Kylie Gardner (t45th, 128).
"I'm incredibly proud of the entire team,'' CSM Coach Keri Rodriguez said. "Varsity and JV stepped up and delivered strong performances across the board. Sofia played an incredible round. We hope to carry the momentum into the next round.''
All of the teams will play 18 holes again on Saturday.
