Flames finish fifth at Mount Marty invite
YANKTON, S.D. – Another excellent day allowed the College of Saint Mary golf team to maintain its fifth-place position as the Mount Marty Invitational concluded a two-day run at Fox Run Golf Course.
CSM shot 345 on Friday to finish with a two-day total of 673, edging Morningside (675) for fifth. Morningside won the meet with a 617, while Doane's "A" and "B'' teams along with Concordia all shot 659 to end in a three-way tie for second.
"Overall, I'm pleased with our strong finish, given this field of strong competitors from mostly GPAC schools,'' CSM Coach Keri Rodriguez said. "We've seen what we have to shoot to keep in the top ranks, and it's definitely not out of the realm of possibility for my talented players.''
Victoria Farkas led the Flames with a 13th-place finish, shooting 83 on Friday to add to her 82 for a 165. Emily Faubel placed 17th with an 85-84—169. Erika Headlee ended 19th with the same score, an 81-88—169. Katie Freeman was 25th with an 80-90—170. And Sofia Chavez took 39th with an 88-92—180.
"We knew today would be a harder course and it proved true,'' Rodriguez said. "There's not a lot of wiggle room if you don't keep it in the fairway – it was all about ball position and playing smart golf.
"We know what we need to work on at practices, and I'm looking forward to seeing what we can accomplish this fall.''
CSM is back in action on Sept. 8 when it hosts the Matthew Goette Fall Classic at Tiburon Golf Club.
