Record-shattering effort has Flames 5th after first day
CAIRO, Neb. – The Flames' golf team turned in a school-record performance at the ideal time on Monday, giving them great momentum heading into the final day of the Great Plains Athletic Conference Championships.
After starting the 36-hole day with a 351, College of Saint Mary improved by a whopping 37 strokes to shoot a 314, shattering the school record of 321. That lifted CSM from ninth place after 18 holes to fifth place after 36 at the Centura Hills Golf Club.
"The girls settled in and played out of their minds the second 18!'' CSM Coach Keri Rodriguez said. "It was a great way to end our day.''
CSM's 314 was the lowest in the second round among the 12 teams in action. The Flames' total of 665 was one shot better than sixth-place Briar Cliff University heading into the final 18 holes on Tuesday. CSM is not far behind third-place Morningside University (656) and fourth-place Concordia University (661).
Dakota Wesleyan University and Doane University share the team lead at 644 heading into Tuesday.
Individually for CSM, sophomore Ritzy Dominguez shot a personal-best of 75 on the second 18, which was tied for the best second round among the 57 competitors. She's tied for 33rd at 97-75—172. Freshman Victoria Farkas shot 84-78—162 and is tied for 11th after day one. Her 78 is a personal collegiate best. Sophomore Katie Freeman carded an 87-80—167 and is tied for 20th. Sophomore Erika Headlee shot 89-81—170 and is 27th overall. Her 81 was also a collegiate personal best. And junior Emily Faubel shot 91-84—175, good for a tie for 39th.
"We'll have to work hard to finish strong tomorrow,'' Rodriguez said. "We know what we need to do and we'll execute the best we can.''
