Flames JV takes 3rd against strong competition
NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. – College of Saint Mary sent its junior varsity golf squad to the Peru State Spring Invite on Friday and Saturday, and placed third in the six-team competition at Table Creek Golf Course.
Morningside University, Mount Marty University, Nebraska Wesleyan University and Peru State College sent their varsity teams, while CSM and Doane University sent their JV squads. Southeast Community College didn't field a full team.
Morningside won with a score of 659, followed by Mount Marty (679), CSM (761), Nebraska Wesleyan (767), Peru State (779) and Doane (827).
Individually for the Flames, sophomore Erika Headlee medaled in ninth place with an 86-88—174.
"It's good experience for them to compete at that level, and I'm proud of how well they did,'' CSM Coach Keri Rodriguez said. "I'm especially proud of Erika for keeping it in the 80s on both days and medaling in ninth.''
Other scorers for CSM were Alexa Piecko 92-97—189; Avery Campbell 95-102—197; Ana Wilson 101-100—201; Samantha Norris 110-109—219.
"The weather conditions Saturday were even more brutal than Friday, but the team held on to our third-place position,'' Rodriguez said.
The event also marked the last collegiate tournament for seniors Campbell and Piecko.
"We will miss them, but we are also excited to see where the future takes them!'' Rodriguez said.
The CSM varsity will be back in action April 14 and 15 at the Kaitlyn Erickson Doane Invite in Lincoln, Neb.
