4th-seeded Flames place 2nd in match-play event
OMAHA, Neb. – The fourth-seeded College of Saint Mary golf team turned in a tremendous performance at the Briar Cliff Match Play event on Thursday and Friday, placing second among the eight teams entered.
In the quarterfinals of the 18-hole match play event on Thursday morning, the Flames edged fifth-seeded Dordt University in a playoff. That sent CSM into the semifinal round against Morningside University on Thursday afternoon, and the Flames recorded a 3.5-1.5 victory over the Mustangs to advance to Friday's championship round.
In the finals, the Flames took on Dakota Wesleyan University, and they dropped a hard-fought 3.5-1.5 decision.
The CSM JV team also competed as the field was one team short, and placed eighth but gained some valuable experience.
"I'm so proud of how my entire team played,'' CSM Coach Keri Rodriguez said. "The varsity competed against two of the top teams in the GPAC and we held our own. And my JV held their own against the varsity squads. It was a great tournament and I'm thrilled with how we ended up.''
CSM will be back in action Tuesday and Wednesday at the Concordia Bulldog Spring Invite in Lincoln.
