Flames take second in home golf tournament
OMAHA, Neb. – A good start, but plenty of room for improvement.
That was the assessment from College of Saint Mary Golf Coach Keri Rodriguez Monday after the host Flames finished second in the Matthew Goette Fall Classic at Tiburon Golf Club.
Mount Marty turned in an 18-hole team score of 351 to win top honors by five strokes over CSM, which carded a 356 during hot, breezy conditions.
Rodriguez said even though her team didn't perform up to its high standards, it kept its composure throughout the day.
"Even with not playing well, I am very pleased with the attitudes on the golf course," she said. "I know some were disappointed, but they kept their chins up, and for a coach, that is a huge win.''
Individually, the Flames medaled three golfers in the top 10. Victoria Farkas shot a round of 85 for fourth place, Erika Headlee fired an 88 for sixth and Katie Freeman also carded an 88 for seventh.
"To have Victoria, Erika and Katie medal in the top 10 was a highlight," Rodriguez said.
Also for CSM, Emily Faubel placed 11th with an 89 and Gabby Sinnett was 17th with a 94. Other scores for the Flames were: Alexa Piecko (95), Ana Wilson (100), Ritzy Dominguez (103), Samantha Doughty (104), Anna Moore (105), Avery Campbell (108) and Samantha Norris (114).
The College of Saint Mary 'B' team finished sixth in the 10-team field with a score of 388, behind third-place Northwestern (358), fourth-place Hastings (364) and fifth-place Doane (377).
The Flames return to action on Sept. 21 at the Buena Vista Fall Invite in Storm Lake, Iowa.
"We need to work on consistency," Rodriguez said. "This is a good team with lots of talent. We'll get there.''
