Flames battle wind in first day at GPAC Championship

SPENCER, Iowa -- The College of Saint Mary golf team is in 11th place after the first two rounds of play at the Great Plains Athletic Conference Golf Championship.

Morningside holds a comfortable 19-stroke lead over second place Briar Cliff following two rounds at the Spencer Golf and Country Club. The Chargers are a further 14 strokes ahead of Dakota Wesleyan and Mount Marty who are tied for third place.

CSM shot 714 (+138) as a team on the day. After carding 359 as a team in the first round, the Flames shaved off four strokes to shoot 355 in the second.

"Nothing went our way today; lip outs, bad breaks and a few bad decisions hurt us. In between those were great shots, fantastic up and downs and putts that sunk. The team was trying so hard but it just wasn't our day," said a proud but disappointed head coach Keri Rodriguez.

Emily Faubel is tied for 17th as College of Saint Mary's best golfer on the day. She backed up her first round 84, by shooting 86 in the second round. She birdied No. 14 during her second round.

Gabby Sinnett was very consistent shooting matching rounds of 90 and is tied for 38th in the 58-golfer field. She posted a birdie on No. 2 during her second round.

Katie Freeman improved four shots off her first round 93 to post an 89 in the second round. She is tied for 41st place. Her day was highlighted by a birdie in the first round on No. 9.

Anna Moore matched Freeman's first round 93 and trimmed three strokes off in her second round and is tied for 44th overall.

Ritzy Dominguez, who shot a first round 92 and followed with a second round 96, finds herself in 51st place.

Morningside's Sofia Castelan holds a 8-stroke lead over the second place trio of teammate Lucy Brown, Isabella Crafford (Jamestown), and Helene Getz Bergmo (Briar Cliff). Sitting atop the individual leaderboard, she began the day with a 3-over 75 in the first round and backed it up with a 5-over 77 in the second.

Looking ahead, coach Rodriguez said, "We plan on coming back tomorrow and scoring better than we did today." The GPAC Championship wraps up tomorrow with third round play beginning at 9 a.m.
