Flames cruise to big win at Peru State Spring Invite

NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. -- The College of Saint Mary golf team shot 49-over on Saturday to lock up the team title at the Peru State Spring Invitational.

The Flames shot 665 for the tournament, finishing at 97-over. They easily outpaced second place Morningside (718, +150) and North Central Missouri College (719, +151).

The result showcases a stark turnaround from their tournament earlier this week. "I'm so incredibly proud of my team. We struggled a lot at our last tournament so to come in and win in very similar cold and windy conditions proved to my players they can do it. They needed this affirmation," said coach Keri Rodriguez.

Morningside's Kendra Casey (+14) held off CSM's Emily Faubel (+17) for the individual title. Casey shot 79 on the day while Faubel shot a second round-low of 78 (+7). Faubel showed great consistency with 11 pars and seven bogeys on the day, including just two bogeys on the back nine.

Gabby Sinnett (+26), Anna Moore (+27) and Ritzy Dominguez (+27) finished in sequence with the former placing fifth while the latter two shared sixth place.

Sinnett (No. 5) and Moore (No. 14) accounted for the Flames' two birdies on the day.

"Anna Moore broke her day-old collegiate record from yesterday, shooting three strokes better," observed coach Rodriguez.

Erika Headlee shot an 87, knocking 10 strokes off her first round total to climb to 13th place in the 34-golfer field.

CSM's "B" team finished in seventh place to coach Rodriguez's delight. "I'm also glad the "B" team was able to compete and support their teammates. A unified and supportive team is the key to success on the course."

Katie Freeman topped the "B" team performers, finished in 12th place. She carded a 20-over 91 on Saturday.

Avery Campbell also earned a top half finish, shooting 20-over on the day to place 15th at 43-over.

Samantha Doughty (+25) finished tied for 20th as teammates Julissa Garcia and Ana Wilson finished in a three-way tie for 25th at 59-over.

"We need to keep up the momentum and continue to improve the rest of the season." College of Saint Mary returns to action on Thursday, Apr. 11 when they host the CSM Spring Classic with a noon tee time at Tiburon Golf Club.
