CSM golfers climb up at spot at Buena Vista Fall Invite
STORM LAKE, Iowa – The College of Saint Mary golf team saw improvement Sunday and moved up a spot in the standings at the Buena Vista University Fall Invite. The Flames took sixth place in team competition.
CSM shot a 355 on Saturday and a 345 on Sunday for a two-day total of 700.
"The team improved today, which helped us bump up a slot to sixth place," CSM Coach Keri Rodriguez said. "This was not an easy course and the pin placements were a challenge."
Coe College won the invite with 673, while Iowa Central Community College was second with 676 and Waldorf University placed third with 679. Augsburg University took fourth with 687 and Buena Vista just edged CSM for fifth place with 695. The Flames beat Concordia University (702), Simpson College (703), York College (799) and NIACC (839).
Megan Tanghe of Coe was the medalist with a two-day total of 153.
Ritzy Dominguez led the way for CSM with an 84-88—172 which tied her for 14th place individually. In other scores for the Flames: Emily Faubel 89-85—174; Alexa Piecko 90-86—176; Gabby Sinnett 92-86—178; Katie Freeman 95-90—185.
"All in all, we kept our chins up and had better attitudes today," Rodriguez said. "I was especially proud of Lexi, who played a great game of golf today with a positive attitude towards her competitors and teammates."
The Flames return to action Wednesday when they host the College of Saint Mary JV Fall Invite. CSM's next varsity competition will be Oct. 6-7 at the Peru State Fall Invite.
"We need to hit the range, but more importantly, we need to work on our mental game and focus on playing smart golf the first day," Rodriguez said. "We're missing out on great opportunities by playing catch up the next day."
