CSM bowlers take 7th at Five Seasons Classic
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – It was another solid day for the Flames.
The College of Saint Mary bowling team moved up a spot in the Five Seasons Classic Sunday. CSM entered in eighth place after Saturday's action but finished seventh with 7,262 total pins and a 6-4 record.
Mount Mercy won the tournament with a perfect 10-0 mark and a total pinfall of 8,773.
"Overall, we finished seventh out of 17 teams in the tournament," CSM Coach Corrinne Johnson said. "The ladies bowled well all weekend including setting a new season high Baker game score of 212. They had fun and finished in the top half."
College of Saint Mary kicked off the day of Baker games with a 628-592 win over the University of Iowa club team. Then the Flames beat Hawkeye Community College 624-566 in the second set.
With those two wins the Flames moved up from eighth to fourth place in the standings. But CSM wasn't done climbing the ranks.
The Flames squeaked past Kansas Wesleyan University 608-603 in the third set of Baker games.
"Against Kansas Wesleyan we had to be on our game making spares," Johnson said. "We took advantage of their missed spares and rallied back to win the tight set. That win was huge for us as we were able to move into third place in the standings."
CSM moved on to face a tough Coe College squad. The two teams tied the first game, but the Flames missed some makeable spares in the second and third games to watch the Kohawks take the lead.
"We rallied back in the fourth game and fired off a 212 game, but it wasn't enough to gain the lead," Johnson said.
Coe beat the Flames 699-688 to take the set.
Going into the position round, CSM entered in sixth place and was matched up against Peru State. Johnson said her ladies struggled adjusting to the lanes and lost 682-609.
The Flames return to action Nov. 8-9 at the Leatherneck Classic in Rockford, Ill.
"We are back to work on the lanes this week preparing for the Leatherneck next weekend," Johnson said.
