CSM bowlers hold on to eighth place at Five Seasons Classic
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The College of Saint Mary bowling team held on to eighth place at the Five Seasons Classic Sunday. The two-day tournament was hosted by Mount Mercy University.
The Flames finished with a total pinfall of 6,954 after knocking down 3,902 in the individual games Saturday and then clearing another 3,052 in Sunday's Baker games. CSM had four head-to-head wins and six head-to-head losses.
Mount Mercy won the tournament after going a perfect 10-0 in head-to-head competition and knocking down 8,776 total pins.
CSM had Baker games of 140, 145, 174 and 125 for 584 to beat Culver-Stockton's 575 in Sunday's opener. Then the Flames cruised past Augustana by a score of 582 to 504 with Baker games of 142, 146, 149 and 145.
Coe College just barely beat the Flames in the third round by scores of 668 to 658 (161, 155, 171, 171) and then Waldorf defeated CSM 642 to 605 (147, 153, 184, 121) in the fourth round. The Flames scored 650 (165, 196, 164, 98) in the fifth and final round.
"Our day started great with two wins," CSM Coach Corrinne Johnson said. "Going into our third set of Bakers we had momentum but with some missed spares we came up 10 pins short to take it from Coe. The same issues continued in our fourth set against Waldorf. In the fifth set and position round we were ahead by 60 some pins going into the fourth Baker game and we missed our spares and lost the set.
"For the entire weekend we bowled well. Finishing in eighth place is a nice place to finish. We need to work on our spare shooting and work on communicating more effectively as a team these next two weeks of practice."
The Flames head to Hastings, Neb., on Nov. 2-3 for the Bronco Open.
