Dmytruk too much for Flames
OMAHA, Neb. – College of Saint Mary didn't have an answer for Cloey Dmytruk on Saturday afternoon.
Dmytruk poured in a career-high 39 points to lead Waldorf University past CSM 77-49 in Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball action at the Lied Fitness Center. Dmytruk's total is a school record in the time that Waldorf has been a four-year institution.
"I should've adjusted us better to guard (Dmytruk),'' CSM Coach Natalie Miller said. "We put too much pressure on ourselves to win the game.''
Waldorf avenged a 73-67 home loss to the Flames on Nov. 22 and improved to 2-13 overall and 1-8 in GPAC play. CSM dropped to 3-13, 2-8.
Dmytruk, a 5-foot-10 senior from St. Paul, Minn., made 15 of 21 from the field, including 5 of 8 from 3-point range, and 4 of 7 at the line. She also grabbed 10 rebounds.
Waldorf broke open the game in the third quarter, going on a 14-3 run to turn a 37-30 lead into a 51-33 advantage.
Miller said her team's 22 turnovers were too many, and 2-for-13 3-point shooting didn't help, either.
"We should have hunted our middle drives more,'' she said.
Ella Klusman led the Flames with 13 points, while Madelyn Gaughen added 10 points, six rebounds and four steals.
"Ella had a good game, being aggressive on offense and defense,'' Miller said.
Haley Debuse had eight points and four rebounds, while Jai'La Porter pitched in seven points, a game-high 13 rebounds and four assists.
The Flames return to action Wednesday with a 6 p.m. GPAC game at Dordt University in Sioux Center, Iowa.
