Turnovers plague CSM in loss
OMAHA, Neb. – Hastings College's full-court pressure defense was the story at the Lied Fitness Center on Wednesday night.
The Broncos forced 42 College of Saint Mary turnovers, including 26 in the first half, en route to a 100-58 Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball victory.
"I think the hardest thing with them is the speed in which they play,'' CSM Coach Natalie Miller said. "They're just so fast. Their defense isn't anything extraordinary. They just play really hard and fly around. For us, what killed us was just the initial pressure of that trap in the press.''
Hastings, which received the second-most votes of those outside the NAIA national top 25 in the last set of rankings, improved to 9-4 overall and 6-2 in GPAC play, while CSM dropped to 3-12 and 2-7.
The Broncos parlayed those 42 forced turnovers into 53 points, more than half of their final total. Mariyah Avila scored 23 points in 23 minutes, while Bailey Kissinger added 16 points, nine rebounds, six steals and four assists.
"They have a lot of versatile and efficient players,'' Miller said.
Hastings raced to a 57-29 lead at the half. CSM's best quarter by far was the third, in which they were outscored only 21-18.
Madelyn Gaughen got to the free-throw line 10 times in the third quarter alone by attacking the basket. She finished with 19 points, hitting 13 of 18 from the line in all, along with seven rebounds. Haley Debuse added 11 points, six rebounds and five assists. Meghan Keil and Ella Klusman had nine points each, and Jai'La Moore grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
"There were some bright spots in there,'' Miller said.
However, Hastings' harassing defense was the story of the game.
"I just felt like we played at an uncomfortable pace,'' Miller said. "We never got control when they were pressing and we lacked the ability to settle down on offense."
The Flames are off until Dec. 30 when they travel to Vermillion, S.D., to take on the NCAA Division I University of South Dakota in a 2 p.m. start.
