Late run propels Mount Marty past Flames
OMAHA, Neb. – Leading by just 10 in the final minute of the third quarter, Mount Marty University went on a decisive 14-0 run and beat College of Saint Mary 82-58 Wednesday in Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball at the Lied Fitness Center.
"We got killed in transition defense,'' CSM Coach Natalie Miller said. "Overall, that bled into all of our defensive possessions, which led to us to be late to shooters and miss boxouts.''
CSM (3-8 overall, 2-3 GPAC) went on a 9-2 run to pull within 53-43 at the 2:39 mark of the third quarter. Ella Klusman had a 3-pointer to cap that run, while Madelyn Gaughen had two free throws, Jai'La Porter added a basket and Haley Debuse fed Lexi Barnes for a layup during that surge.
The Flames still were in contention with 41 seconds left in the third when Debuse scored to trim the Lancers' lead to 57-47. However, Mount Marty (7-2, 3-2) scored the next 14 points over the next 3:34 to extend to a 71-47 advantage.
"Offensively, we didn't get downhill enough and were too one-and-done, which led to terrible shooting percentages,'' Miller said. "We finally went 100% from the free-throw line.''
CSM made 21 of 67 field goals (31.3%), including 4 of 21 (19.0%) from beyond the arc, although it did make all 12 free-throw attempts.
Porter turned in another strong performance with 24 points, 11 rebounds and three steals, hitting 10 of 18 from the field and all four free throws.
"Jai'La had a great game,'' Miller said.
Debuse added 11 points and four rebounds, while Madelyn Gaughen had eight rebounds and three assists. CSM was outrebounded 58-40 and turned it over 20 times.
The Flames return to action Saturday with another GPAC home game, hosting Morningside University at 2 p.m.
