CSM basketball falls to Dakota Wesleyan

MITCHELL, S.D. – The College of Saint Mary basketball team had trouble getting enough shots up Saturday at Dakota Wesleyan University.

The Tigers defeated CSM 87-58 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference contest held at the Corn Palace.

Both team shot 43 percent from the floor, but DWU put up 80 field goals and the Flames only put up 51. The Tigers were 27 percent from 3-point range and 81 percent from the free-throw line, while CSM was 18 percent from long distance and 73 percent from the charity stripe.

The Flames played a strong first quarter and only trailed by five points after the opening segment. But DWU outscored the visitors 30-10 in the second quarter to lead 48-23 at the intermission. The Tigers then bested CSM 19-14 in the third quarter before the Flames outscored DWU 21-20 in the final frame.

"We got off to a solid start again and were only down five at the end of the first quarter," CSM Coach Kirk Walker said. "Then we turned it over 11 times in the second quarter and got down by 25 at the half. We came out and played a solid second half with only 11 turnovers, but gave up 14 offensive rebounds so we couldn't mount any kind of comeback."

Aleigha Jackson led the Flames with a team-high 18 points and a team-high six rebounds. Madison Camden tossed in 13 points, while Tia Murray scored 11 points and had four blocks. Also for CSM, ShyAnne Mayhue scored eight and Chainey Thompson chipped in with six points.

"Madison got in foul trouble in the first half which hurt but she ended up with a perfect shooting day," Walker said. "Tia played really well but we have to get her more shot attempts.

"Overall, other than the second quarter we played a pretty solid game against a really good team. Our team is playing hard – we just have to get more scoring depth."

The Flames (0-20 GPAC, 1-24 overall) wrap up the 2023-2024 season with two home games this upcoming week. CSM plays host to Doane University at 6 p.m. Wednesday and then plays host to Mount Marty University at 2 p.m. Saturday.

"We'll get after it Monday and be ready to play Wednesday," Walker said.
