Strong fourth quarter not enough for Flames

OMAHA, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary basketball team poured in 25 points in the final quarter, but it wasn't enough to overtake Midland University.

The Warriors won 78-63 Wednesday night in the Great Plains Athletic Conference contest.

"The fight we showed in that fourth quarter was pretty awesome," CSM Assistant Coach Genese Hodges said. "Those last nine minutes showed who we are as a team. It showed how good we can be. It showed our fight and how bad we wanted to win."

Midland took an early lead in the opening quarter by a score of 22-17 despite a long buzzer-beater from Aleigha Jackson. The Warriors outscored CSM 21-13 in the second quarter to lead 43-30 at the intermission. Midland controlled the third quarter 23-8 before the Flames outscored the visitors 25-12 in the final frame.

Jackson canned a game-high 24 points and also added four assists. Teammate Tia Murray tossed in 20 points, had six rebounds and finished with four blocks. Madison Camden had a double-double for CSM with 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Midland shot 52 percent from the field, 35 percent from long distance and 86 percent from the free-throw line. The Flames were 33 percent, 19 percent and 74 percent, respectively.

The Warriors improved to 3-16 in the GPAC and 6-19 overall. CSM dropped to 0-19, 1-23.

The Flames resume action Saturday at Dakota Wesleyan University at 3 p.m.
