Flames battle against the No. 1 team in the country
SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – College of Saint Mary had three players score in double figures against the No. 1 team in the country Saturday. The Flames lost 77-58 to Dordt University on the road.
"I felt like we really competed today," CSM Coach Kirk Walker said. "The first six or seven minutes of the game we really got after it. And then the first five or six minutes of the third quarter was more of the same. We just didn't have enough in the tank against the top team in the country."
The Flames were playing with just seven athletes, while the Defenders played 15 in the contest.
With the win, Dordt remains undefeated in the Great Plains Athletic Conference at 18-0 and is 23-1 on the season. CSM drops to 0-18, 1-22.
"The last three weeks have been demanding with us being short on numbers and playing five of the top seven teams in the GPAC," Walker said. "I'm really proud of the work and fight of our team through a lot of adversity."
Madison Camden led the Flames with 14 points, while teammate ShyAnne Mayhue canned 13, Tia Murray scored 12 and Chainey Thompson added eight. Mayhue had a team-high six rebounds.
"ShyAnne had another good game with 13 points, six rebounds and was really aggressive offensively," Walker said. "Madelyn Gaughen did a really good job defensively and competed on the boards today and Madison Camden had another solid game for us."
The Flames return to action Wednesday with a 6 p.m. home game vs. Midland University.
"I know that we'll come out and play with a lot of intensity and effort these last two weeks," Walker said.
