Concordia's pressure too much for Flames

SEWARD, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary basketball team took on one of the top teams in the country Wednesday. The Flames lost 106-59 to Concordia University on the road.

CSM remains winless in the Great Plains Athletic Conference with a 0-17 record and a 1-21 overall mark. The Bulldogs, ranked No. 6 in the most recent NAIA poll, improve to 14-3, 20-3.

Concordia jumped to a 31-16 lead after the opening quarter and then led 57-35 at the intermission. The Bulldogs outscored the visitors 22-13 in the third quarter and 27-11 in the final frame to secure the win.

CSM shot 38 percent from the floor, 35 percent from 3-point range and 75 percent from the free-throw line. Concordia was 52 percent, 51 percent and 80 percent, respectively. The Bulldogs had the rebounding advantage 41-33.

Perhaps one of the biggest factors was Concordia's defensive pressure that caused 28 CSM turnovers.

"We played really hard today," CSM Coach Kirk Walker said. "We just can't duplicate their pressure in practice."

Tia Murray led the Flames with 15 points, while Chainey Thompson canned four treys for 12 points. Teammate Jazmyne Villalobos scored nine points, while Madison Camden scored eight, grabbed 11 rebounds and finished with six assists.

"Madison Camden really did a great job on the boards today with 11 rebounds," Walker said. "And it was good to see Chainey get back into her form shooting the ball. I thought ShyAnne (Mayhue) really gave us a spark and did a good job posting up and getting some baskets inside for us. I felt like she really competed."

The tough week continues for the Flames as they face the No. 1 team in the country Saturday with a 2 p.m. contest at Dordt University.

"It doesn't get any easier as we have to go to No. 1 Dordt on Saturday," Walker said. "But I have no doubt in my mind that this group will show up, compete and play hard."
