Murray, Anderson lead CSM vs. Doane

CRETE, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary basketball team got double-doubles from two players Wednesday night.

CSM's Tia Murray had 17 points and 10 rebounds, while teammate Sidney Anderson tallied 15 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.

Unfortunately, the big nights from those two weren't enough to lift CSM to victory. The Flames lost 93-47 to Doane University in the Great Plains Athletic Conference game.

"Sid and Tia seemed to find a little bit of continuity for the first time this year and that certainly helped," CSM Coach Kirk Walker said. "They both had double-doubles so that was a positive offensively. Ava Schroeder came off the bench and in her first action in a couple of weeks had seven points so that was another positive."

College of Saint Mary shot 32 percent from the floor, 16 percent from 3-point range and 75 percent from the free-throw line. Doane was 44 percent for field goals, 28 percent for treys and 81 percent from the charity stripe. The Tigers won the rebounding game with 46 boards compared to CSM's 39. The Flames were also hampered by 35 turnovers, while Doane had just 12.

The Flames played well from the start – something that the team has been struggling with in the past few games. Both teams scored 17 points in the opening quarter. But Doane outscored CSM 19-9 in the second frame and 36-3 in the third quarter to break open the game. The Tigers bested College of Saint Mary 21-18 in the final quarter.

"We got off to a really good start and seemed to be in a little bit of a rhythm with what we're trying to do," Walker said. "They made some adjustments to our inside game and we struggled to make perimeter shots. We also struggled against their pressure in the second and third quarters. We had 17 first-half turnovers and 18 second-half turnovers which resulted in 37 points for them.

"We have to find a way to handle pressure better and also shoot it better from the perimeter."

CSM drops to 0-11 in the GPAC and 1-15 overall. Doane improves to 6-5, 11-6. The Flames are back in action Friday with a 6 p.m. contest against the University of Jamestown.
