Flames run out of gas in loss to Hastings

OMAHA, Neb. – Hastings College went on a 10-0 run to open the fourth quarter to break open an otherwise close game. The Broncos defeated College of Saint Mary 84-62 Wednesday night.

The Flames led for most of the first half as they posted a 17-14 advantage after the first quarter and a 34-29 lead at the intermission. The Broncos closed the gap and took the lead in the third frame by outscoring CSM 23-14. Then the Flames appeared to run out of gas in the fourth quarter as Hastings outscored the home team 32-14 in that frame to secure the win.

College of Saint Mary was playing without Head Coach Kirk Walker (illness).

"We played one heck of a game," CSM Assistant Coach Genese Hodges said. "The energy was high and we gave it our all."

Tia Murray led the Flames with a season-high and game-high 25 points. Teammate Madison Camden knocked in 15 points, Chainey Thompson scored nine and ShyAnne Mayhue added seven. Mayhue had a game-high eight rebounds and four assists.

Hastings shot 49 percent from the floor, 32 percent from 3-point range and 70 percent from the charity stripe. CSM shot 43 percent, 54 percent and 52 percent, respectively. The Broncos won the battle on the boards by outrebounding the Flames 39-33. But, perhaps, the biggest statistical difference was Hastings got 36 points from the bench compared to CSM's one point.

"We thought we had a chance, but fell short because we ran out of steam," Hodges said. "We were not able to bring in five fresh players like they did and it showed. But, overall, I thought we played with heart and left it all on the court."

The loss drops College of Saint Mary to 0-6 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference and 1-8 overall. Hastings improves to 2-4, 4-6.

The Flames resume action Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest at the University of Jamestown.
