Camden has season-high 24 points in CSM's loss
OMAHA, Neb. – Madison Camden scored a season-high 24 points for the College of Saint Mary basketball team Saturday. Unfortunately, the Flames lost the contest 94-66.
Morningside University used a strong start to gain a 28-9 advantage in the opening quarter and held on to win the Great Plains Athletic Conference game.
"We did not get off to a good start against their pressure and dug a huge hole that was difficult to overcome," CSM Coach Kirk Walker said.
The Mustangs outscored CSM 29-21 in the second quarter, but the Flames came out of halftime and bested the visitors 21-19 in the frame. Morningside outscored CSM 18-15 in the final frame.
The Flames had a better shooting percentage in the game as CSM shot 51 percent from the floor, 43 percent from 3-point range and 86 percent from the charity stripe. The Mustangs shot 41 percent, 24 percent and 63 percent, respectively. In the rebounding category, Morningside had 52 compared to CSM's 23.
"The difference in the game was offensive rebounding where they beat us 31-0," Walker said. "That is the only thing I'm really disappointed in. We weren't very tough or physical on the boards on either end."
Camden's 24 points were a game high. CSM teammate Tia Murray added 12 points, Chainey Thompson scored seven and both ShyAnne Mayhue and Jazmyne Villalobos chipped in with six. Ava Schroeder had a team-high four rebounds and Villalobos added four assists.
"Madison had the breakout game we've been waiting for from her," Walker said. "I felt Chainey really competed again today and keeps getting better. And Jazz played more relaxed and confident – which was good to see."
The Flames drop to 0-5 in the GPAC and 1-7 overall. Morningside improves to 2-3, 5-4. CSM's next action is Wednesday at home vs. Hastings College. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
