Concordia's pressure is too much for Flames
OMAHA, Neb. – Concordia University's pressure was too much for the Flames to handle Tuesday night.
Concordia defeated College of Saint Mary 119-54 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference contest. The Bulldogs entered the game with an undefeated record and are ranked No. 11 in the country in the most recent NAIA poll.
CSM committed 38 turnovers in the game and the Bulldogs turned that into 57 points. Concordia shot 54 percent from the floor, 31 percent from 3-point range and 57 percent from the free-throw line. The Flames shot 37 percent on the night, 15 percent from long distance and 70 percent from the charity stripe.
"I felt like we were ready to play and came out strong to start the game," CSM Coach Kirk Walker said. "They just play at a pace that we can't match right now with our depth. The 2nd and 3rd quarters got away from us. We cannot duplicate the kind of pressure that they can bring which also hurts us. We didn't shoot the ball that poorly once we got shots – we just didn't get enough shots."
Ava Schroeder led the Flames with 15 points in her first collegiate start. Teammate Tia Murray scored 10, Madison Camden added eight and Sienna Hundal and Jazmyne Villalobos both chipped in six. Schroeder also had a game-high nine rebounds.
"I thought Ava did a really good job tonight in only her second college game," Walker said. "She was really aggressive."
With the loss, CSM drops to 0-3 in the GPAC and 1-5 overall. Concordia improves to 3-0, 5-0.
The Flames have another game before the Thanksgiving break. CSM plays an exhibition contest Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the University of Nebraska Kearney.
"Hopefully we'll learn from this and try to find the things we did well and work to be more consistent in those things," Walker said. "Our players are working hard and we'll just keep grinding away and get better."
