CSM basketball falls to undefeated Chargers

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The College of Saint Mary basketball team got outscored in all four quarters in a 103-47 loss to Briar Cliff University Saturday afternoon.

The Chargers, who were ranked No. 12 in the most recent NAIA poll, improved to 2-0 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference and 6-0 overall. The Flames drop to 0-2, 1-4.

"We just did not seem ready to play today," CSM Coach Kirk Walker said. "I felt like we had done the things necessary to prepare for this game. But we got off to a poor start and never recovered. We just don't seem to be getting the consistent play that we need to compete with the top teams in the GPAC."

Briar Cliff outscored CSM 27-12 in the first quarter and 36-11 in the second quarter to lead 63-23 at the intermission. The Chargers then bested the Flames 18-9 in the third quarter and 22-15 in the final frame.

Madison Camden led College of Saint Mary with nine points, while ShyAnne Mayhue and Tia Murray both chipped in with eight. Murray had a team-high seven rebounds.

"I feel like ShyAnne, Madison and Chainey (Thompson) all were aggressive on defense and played well overall," Walker said. "We just have to find some continuity with what we're doing on both ends of the floor. I need to find a better way to help our ladies understand the things that we're asking them to do."

Things don't get any easier for the Flames as Concordia University – ranked No. 11 in the most recent poll – comes to Omaha on Tuesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
