Flames lose GPAC opener to Jamestown

OMAHA, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary basketball team opened play in the Great Plains Athletic Conference Saturday with a loss to the University of Jamestown.

The Jimmies won the GPAC opener 67-46.

The Flames opened the game with the fourth different starting lineup in as many games due to injuries and family emergencies.

Jamestown started hot and outscored College of Saint Mary 26-9 in the opening quarter. But the Flames battled and bested the Jimmies 15-11 in the second frame. Jamestown outscored CSM 20-12 in the third quarter and both teams scored 10 points in the fourth.

"I felt like we played with a lot of energy right away but they went on a run early and we didn't respond getting down 17 points out of the shoot," CSM Coach Kirk Walker said. "We closed the gap and played well in the second quarter and early in the third and had it down to a six-point game but couldn't sustain the momentum."

The Jimmies shot 38 percent from the floor, 39 percent from 3-point range and 93 percent from the charity stripe. CSM shot 37 percent from the floor, 24 percent from long distance and 44 percent from the free-throw line.

"It still comes down to made lay-ups and free throws for our team," Walker said.

Allison Schubert (JR/Council Bluffs, Iowa) led the Flames with 15 points, while Bailey White (SR/Council Bluffs, Iowa) canned 12 points and Morgann Worden (FR/Laramie, Wyo.) added seven points. Kenzi Hoit (SR/Omaha, Neb.) had a team-high seven rebounds for CSM.

"Bailey bounced back with a solid game," Walker said. "Morgann played well and was aggressive on the offensive end. Kylee had a solid floor game with six assists to three turnovers."

The Flames are now 0-1 in the GPAC and 2-3 overall. CSM returns to action next on Wednesday when the Flames play host to Northwestern College at 6 p.m.

"We just have to continue to work, continue to be mentally tough, and find a way," Walker said.
