CSM basketball ends season on a high note
YANKTON, S.D. – Ending on a high note.
The College of Saint Mary basketball team won its final game of the season Saturday afternoon with an 80-72 victory over Mount Marty University in a Great Plains Athletic Conference contest.
The Flames were playing shorthanded – with just seven student-athletes – because of injuries.
"Today was a great way to end our season," CSM Coach Kirk Walker said. "We didn't quite accomplish our goal of getting to the conference tournament, but certainly gave ourselves a lot of chances throughout the year.
"We were very shorthanded today with three starters in street clothes. But our seven players showed a lot of guts and determination."
College of Saint Mary had five players in double figures for balanced scoring.
Madelyn Turner (JR/Bennington, Neb.) and Honnah Leo (SO/Omaha, Neb.) led the way with 16 points each, while Allison Schubert (SO/Council Bluffs, Iowa) tossed in 14 points, Kenzi Hoit (JR/Omaha, Neb.) canned 13 points and Bailey White (JR/Council Bluffs, Iowa) added 11. Turner had a game-high eight rebounds and Hoit dished out a game-high five assists.
The Flames shot 48 percent from the floor, 43 percent from 3-point range and 70 percent from the free-throw line. Mount Marty was 44 percent overall, 29 percent from long distance and 67 percent from the charity stripe.
"We got to the free-throw line 33 times today which was a season high for us," Walker said. "We were 89 percent from the line in the fourth quarter when it mattered most."
The Flames finish the season with a 7-15 GPAC record and a 13-15 overall mark.
"All seven of our ladies that played today really competed," Walker said. "It was a solid outing for us to get the win and it is a great momentum builder going into next year.
"We had our best year in the last six years and it's all because we had a group of players this year that didn't have to be asked to practice hard and play hard. They just did it and they competed every night out. I'm really proud of this group and what they've accomplished this year. I expect even bigger and better things for our basketball program next season."
