Injuries plague Flames in loss to Jamestown

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – With a limited bench, the College of Saint Mary basketball team traveled up to University of Jamestown Thursday and suffered a tough loss.

The Jimmies won the Great Plains Athletic Conference contest 87-51.

The Flames started the game with just eight players due to injuries. When Sidney Anderson (FR/Omaha, Neb.) left the game due to injury early in the first half, CSM was forced to finish the rest of the game with just seven.

"It just wasn't our night," CSM Coack Kirk Walker said. "We were already out two starters with Clare Lewandowski (JR/Lincoln, Neb.) and Alyssa Marsh-Contreras (SR/Omaha, Neb.) not able to play and then when Sidney went out our shorthanded team became even more shorthanded."

The Flames scored just five points in the first quarter and eight points in the second quarter to trail 46-13 at halftime. But CSM didn't quit.

"I thought our ladies really battled," Walker said. "We had a much better second half than first half.

"I'm proud of the effort we gave tonight. The ball just didn't go in the basket in the first half and we had trouble with the size disadvantage to try to stop them."

College of Saint Mary rallied to outscore the Jimmies 23-18 in the third quarter and then was bested 23-15 in the fourth frame.

Jamestown shot 49 percent from the floor, 40 percent from 3-point range and 57 percent from the charity stripe. The Flames shot 29 percent for the night, 21 percent from long distance and 69 percent from the free-throw line.

Honnah Leo (SO/Omaha, Neb.) led CSM with 13 points. Teammate Kenzi Hoit (JR/Omaha, Neb.) tallied 12 points, Allisa Schubert (SO/Council Bluffs, Iowa) tossed in 10 and Bailey White (JR/Council Bluffs, Iowa) scored nine. Allison Schubert (SO/Council Bluffs, Iowa) had a team-high eight rebounds.

"Allisa Schubert played really well for the second game in a row and I thought Allison Schubert was really good on the boards," Walker said. "Bailey is continuing to shoot the ball well."

The Flames fall to 6-15 in the GPAC and 12-15 overall. Jamestown is now 11-10 and 18-11.

College of Saint Mary wraps up its season on Saturday with a 2 p.m. contest at Mount Marty University.

"We have to find a way to get some rest tomorrow and have our legs back for our game on Saturday," Walker said. "I would fully expect our team to continue to compete and play hard – which they've done all year."
