Flames suffer disappointing loss on Senior Day

OMAHA, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary basketball team suffered a tough loss Saturday on Senior Day.

The Flames lost 98-73 to Concordia University in the Great Plains Athletic Conference contest. With the loss, CSM was mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.

"Unfortunately, we can no longer make the conference tournament which is disappointing," CSM Coach Kirk Walker said. "That was one of the goals we set at the beginning of the year and we've just been snake-bit in close games."

Both teams shot the ball well Saturday as the Bulldogs shot 59 percent in the game and the Flames shot 56 percent. CSM shot 78 percent from the free-throw line, while Concordia was 73 percent. But the difference may have been with the long ball.

Concordia made 14 of 26 from 3-point range for 54 percent, while the Flames made eight of 19 for 42 percent.

"They shot 64 percent in the first half from 3-point range and 54 percent for the game," Walker said. "That was the difference."

Bailey White (JR/Council Bluffs, Iowa) led the Flames with a career-high 17 points. She drained five treys. Teammate Honnah Leo (SO/Omaha, Neb.) added 13 points, while Allisa Schubert (SO/Council Bluffs, Iowa) and Brynnan Sargent (FR/Omaha, Neb.) both had nine and Madelyn Turner (JR/Bennington, Neb.) added eight. Sidney Anderson (FR/Omaha, Neb.) pulled down a game-high eight rebounds and Kenzi Hoit (JR/Omaha, Neb.) dished out six assists.

"Bailey had a great game scoring a career-high 17 points," Walker said. "Kenzi and Allison Schubert (SO/Council Bluffs, Iowa) both distributed the ball well and Honnah had another good game.

"Going into the game we knew we had to take care of the basketball and rebound on the offensive end and we just didn't do either well enough. We also lost Alyssa Marsh-Contreras (SR/Omaha, Neb.) at halftime after she bumped her head in the first half and that hurt us."

The Flames drop to 6-14 in the GPAC and 12-14 overall. Concordia improves to 12-8, 15-11. CSM plays again Thursday at University of Jamestown.

"We have two games left to get our record to .500 for the season," Walker said. "So we still have a lot to play for. We can bounce back next week and find a way to win a couple. It's not going to be easy on the road, but hopefully we can find a little more in the tank to play 80 more minutes of basketball this season."
