Weather halts play, Flames’ bid for a split
SEWARD, Neb. – An eventful day ended Saturday with Concordia University beating College of Saint Mary 9-1 in five innings in the first game of their GPAC softball doubleheader, and the second game being halted due to weather with a 3-3 score in the top of the seventh.
The second game will not be completed because it will not impact seeding for the upcoming Great Plains Athletic Conference Tournament.
"It was a tricky day with the weather,'' CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "We had two lightning delays during warmups before the first game even started.''
Concordia improved to 22-18 overall and 11-10 in the GPAC, while CSM dropped to 8-30 and 4-17.
CSM had only four hits in the opener, while the Bulldogs scored at least two runs in four of their five innings.
"We did not hit well in the first game and struggled to make adjustments at the plate,'' Bray said. "Then we had a couple innings defensively where we had two outs, but then an error or mistake extended the innings and allowed Concordia to get more runs.''
The highlight for CSM came in the third inning. Adelia Dunlap singled and was bunted over by Ella Christensen. Then Kayla Reed hit a scorching shot to the 215-foot fence for a big RBI double.
The Flames played much better softball in the second game.
In the third inning, Shalynn Campbell singled and then freshman Kynzee McFadden smashed a two-run homer, her third of the season.
CSM made it 3-0 in the top of the fourth when Allyson Lynch singled and eventually scored on Ella Watts' single.
Concordia answered with three in the bottom of the fourth, and it stayed that way until the seventh, when Mother Nature intervened.
"It's a bummer that the lightning and storms halted game two,'' Bray said. "It was a good game. Allyson Lynch was another highlight as she came on to pitch in relief. She made two big defensive plays in the circle to get us out of jams.''
Lynch allowed two hits and no earned runs in her 2.1 innings of work. Watts went 2 for 3 with the RBI.
But the game ultimately won't be finished. CSM is scheduled to close its season on Monday with a 6 p.m. nonconference game at Bellevue University.
"We have one final game on Monday and will focus on trying to play our best softball of the year against a tough Bellevue team,'' Bray said.
