Flames notch first GPAC sweep of Doane since 2019

OMAHA, Neb. – Delivering a complete performance in all phases, College of Saint Mary on Monday registered its first GPAC softball sweep of Doane University in seven years.

The Flames defeated Doane 6-3 and 5-4 on a chilly day at their home complex.

"We put all three things together: pitching, hitting and defense,'' CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "We're super happy to get a sweep.''

CSM improved to 7-19 overall and jumped back into the chase for one of the eight Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament spots, improving to 3-7 in league play.

"We know we need to get a bunch of wins to stay in the playoff hunt,'' Bray said. "That was the goal for today, so we're really happy to get two big conference wins.''

Doane dropped to 17-16 and 4-6.

In the opener, sophomore Maycee Hays notched the biggest hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth with the score tied 1-1. After two pitches resulted in two CSM outs, a pair of walks and a Haley Anderson single loaded the bases for Hays. She slammed a three-run triple over the right fielder's head for a 4-1 lead.

One inning later, freshman Kynzee McFadden smacked a two-run homer, the second of her career, for a 6-2 Flames lead.

That was enough for Shaylynn Campbell, who returned to the circle after missing some starts with a nagging injury. She earned the complete-game victory, scattering nine hits and allowing just two earned runs while notching her 200th career strikeout.

"I thought Shaylynn pitched well and we played good defense,'' Bray said.

Centerfielder Kayla Reed turned in a key defensive play in the top of the sixth, throwing out Addison Parsons trying to stretch a single into a double to lead off the inning. The next two Tigers in the inning had hits.

Hays finished the opener with four RBIs, while McFadden and Campbell ended with two hits each.

In game two, CSM found more clutch hitting.

It scored the first three runs of the game in the third inning. Campbell's single scored Ella Watts, who had singled, with the first run.

With two on and two outs, Maria Perez fouled off five two-strike pitches during a nine-pitch at-bat. On the ninth pitch, she lined a two-run single to score McFadden and Campbell and make it 3-0.

Leading 3-2 in the sixth, Perez led off with an 11-pitch walk. With two outs, Makenna Earnest pounded a two-run homer to center, the second of her career, to make it 5-2.

"Kenna had a great homer and Maria had two big at-bats,'' Bray said. "I think she's the best on our team, as far as seeing balls and strikes. She knows her strike zone very, very well. She just battled.''

Doane trimmed the lead to 5-4 and then Campbell came on in relief of McFadden to record the final two outs and finish off CSM's first GPAC sweep of the season.

McFadden got the win by allowing four earned runs in her 6.1 innings of work.

"Kynzee pitched well and Shaylynn came in and shut the door,'' Bray said.

Watts went 2 for 3 in game two. Bray said Hays had a "great day" behind the plate for the Flames.

CSM's next scheduled games are Wednesday at 4 and 6 p.m. in Fremont against GPAC rival Midland University.
