Red Raiders blank Flames in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. – Freshman Audrie Kohl threw a no-hitter and Northwestern College, ranked 18th in the first NAIA national softball poll of the year, blanked fellow Great Plains Athletic Conference member College of Saint Mary 9-0 Wednesday in six innings at the Tucson Invitational.

The Flames (3-7) were in contention through four innings, as the game remained scoreless heading into the fifth. However, the Red Raiders (14-5) broke through with four in the fifth and five in the sixth. The game doesn't count in the GPAC standings.

"We played really good for four innings defensively and then struggled in the fifth and sixth,'' CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "We struggled offensively. Great job by their pitcher!''

The defensive highlight came from Kayla Reed, who "had an amazing ESPN catch over the centerfield fence to rob a homer,'' Bray said.

Bray added that Ella Christensen worked really hard at a different defensive position, third base, and that pitchers Shaylynn Campbell and Victoria Placzek threw well.

CSM did have baserunners, as it drew four walks and reached on a pair of errors.

After the varsity game, CSM won 4-2 in a four-inning JV scrimmage. Bray said Adelia Dunlap made a great diving catch and Placzek and Christensen had big hits.
