SHAWNEE, Kan. – Two markedly different games resulted in a softball split by the College of Saint Mary on Saturday in the Midwest College Classic.
The Flames outslugged York University 16-11 in their opener before dropping an 8-0, five-inning decision to Bellevue University.
"It's frustrating to see the extremes – the highs and lows – from our team in back-to-back games,'' CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said.
In the opener, the Flames unleashed a 15-hit attack on the Panthers, scoring in every inning.
CSM (3-6) carried a 12-11 lead into the top of the sixth. Haley Anderson and Kayla Reed singled earlier in the inning, and Ella Watts blasted a 3-run homer to center to give the Flames some breathing room.
It was Watts' second home run of the game. She finished 3 for 4 with four RBIs and four runs scored.
Makenna Earnest slammed her first career home run in the third inning, a two-run shot to left. She finished 2 for 5 with three RBIs.
Shaylynn Campbell was 3 for 5 with three RBIs, including a double. Anderson finished 2 for 2 with four RBIs, while Reed was 2 for 4 with three runs scored, including a double.
"Our hitting was great and we had a lot of quality at-bats,'' Bray said. "We had two big sac flys from Anderson. Shay and Kynzee (McFadden) pitched well. It was a fun team win. Long game.''
In the second game, the Flames' bats went quiet. They managed only one hit – a second-inning single by Maycee Hays against Carly Bertolini.
"We did not play well again versus Bellevue,'' Bray said. "We didn't hit well, we didn't pitch well and we didn't play good defense.''
The Bruins scored twice in four of their five innings at bat to steadily pull away for their second win over the Flames this season.
Bray said it was nice playing their first outside games, but was disappointed in the second half of the day.
"We weren't ready for game two,'' she said.
