Flames drop 2 at Gulf Coast Invitational
GULF SHORES, Ala. – College of Saint Mary lost its two games on Saturday at the Gulf Coast Invitational, dropping a 2-1 decision to Nelson (Ariz.) University and a 10-2, five-inning contest to Campbellsville (Ky.) University.
"We did not play well today,'' CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "We could get clutch hits or bunts down, so we're disappointed.''
In the Nelson loss, CSM opened the scoring in the second inning, as Maycee Hays singled, moved to second on a popout, took third on a Cassie Wiseman single and scored on Kayla Reed's single.
The Lions scored what proved to be the winning runs in the third, on RBIs from Briyanel Celeya and Vanessa Philpot.
CSM finished with 10 hits, including two each by Shaylynn Campbell, Amber Kosmicki, Hays and Reed, but stranded too many runners. Campbell did a great job of working out of trouble, allowing 13 hits but only two earned runs.
"Shay pitched well, especially with tough field conditions,'' Bray said.
In the Campbellsville game, CSM scored twice in the third inning to pull within 4-2. Hays had a two-run single in the frame.
However, Campbellsville broke it open with a six-run fifth inning to end it.
Bray said Hays played well offensive and defensively on the day, and also noted the defense of Wiseman and a couple of big plays from Reed.
The Flames are scheduled to conclude their participation in the tournament on Sunday at 9 a.m. Central Daylight Time against Houston-Victoria.
